How to Check If Your Smart Serve Certificate Has Expired
Smart Serve certificates are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. Here is where to find your expiry date, what happened to older certificates, and what renewing costs.

Smart Serve certificates are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. AGCO puts the same rule the other way round: in Ontario, all liquor training certifications need to be renewed every five years.
So the check is simple. Find your issue date, add five years, and compare that to today. Two things complicate it: the date can be hard to find, and older certificates follow a rule that has already run out.

Where your expiry date lives
Your certificate is digital. Log in to your Smart Serve account and open the My Results tab, where your eCertificate sits with its dates on it.
Plastic cards are no longer mailed, so a card in your wallet is an old one by definition. If you have a card and no account access, the account is still the place to start, because the eCertificate is the record.
Check the date before you need it. A shift manager asking for proof on your first day is a bad moment to discover you cannot log in.
If your certificate was issued before September 2018
Older certificates do not roll forward. AGCO extended their deadline once, then closed it.
Liquor training certificates issued before September 1, 2018 remained valid until August 31, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. That deadline has passed. If your certificate dates from before September 2018, it has expired, whatever the card says.
This included certificates from the old Server Intervention Program. The date on the card does not extend the rule.
If your certificate was issued after July 2018
Anyone certified on or after July 1, 2018 has 5 years from the date of issue to recertify. The rolling five-year clock is the rule that applies to almost everyone working today.
The recertification requirement itself began on July 1, 2022. AGCO announced it on November 9, 2021, which is why some long-serving staff remember a time when a certificate never expired.
Work out your own date in one step:
- Find the issue date on your eCertificate.
- Add five years.
- If that date has passed, you are no longer certified.
What renewing costs, before and after
Timing is the only thing separating two prices:

Smart Serve states the rule directly. People with a current, not-expired certificate can recertify online for a reduced fee of $29.95 before their certificate expires. Once it expires, the full cost of $44.95 applies.
Passing issues a new eCertificate with a 5-year expiry date. Recertification is the full course, so expect the same 33 question proctored final test and the same pass mark of 80% or higher. Our Smart Serve recertification guide covers the process in full.
Why the date matters to your employer
Certification is a legal requirement for the people who sell, serve, sample or deliver liquor, and it must be in place before their first day. An expired certificate puts you outside that requirement, however long you have done the job.
AGCO recommends that licensees keep copies of their staff certifications. AGCO Inspectors may ask a licensee for proof of a staff member's certification at any time. Your manager is not being difficult when they ask you for a current copy.
The practical move is to renew a few weeks early. You keep the $29.95 rate, you avoid a gap in your certification, and you are not studying under pressure.
Set the reminder now
The day you pass, do two things. Save a copy of your eCertificate somewhere you will still have access to in five years. Then put the expiry date in your calendar with a reminder a month out.
